Symptoms Of Pleural Mesothelioma And When They Occur

Posted by | Posted in Alternative Treatment | Posted on 30-06-2010

Malignant mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops from the pleura, which covers many body organs. It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Pleura is the most common location, but it can also be found in peritoneum and pericardium.

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked in areas that involve the processing of asbestos or were exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways. It was suggested that the clothes washing of a family member who works with asbestos could endanger the one that washes them with the risk of developing mesothelioma. Unlike the lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking, but smoking increases the risk of other cancers caused by asbestos.

Which Are The Symptoms Of Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma symptoms include difficulty to breath due to pleurisy, chest pain and general symptoms such as weight loss. Symptoms or signs of mesothelioma may not be evident until 20-50 years after the exposure to asbestos. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, increased abdominal circumference and pain due to ascites, intestinal obstruction, anemia and fever. If the cancer has already spread outside the mezotelite area to other body parts, the symptoms may also include pain, dysphasia, or swelling of the face and neck. Difficulty breathing, coughing and chest pain due to accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of the pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss, abdominal swelling and pain. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia and fever. If the mesothelioma cancer has spread to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing and swelling of the neck or face.

These symptoms may be caused by either mesothelioma or by other conditions that are less serious.

Mesothelioma that affects the pleura can cause these symptoms:

  • Chest pain
  • Pleural effusion
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Fatigue
  • Coughing blood

In serious cases, the person may have more tumor masses. Tumors that affect the abdominal cavity often do not cause any symptoms until they are in an advanced stage.

The symptoms of these tumors include:

  • abdominal pain
  • abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdomen
  • bowel function problems
  • weight loss

In the severe cases, these signs and symptoms may also be present:

  • Blood vein clots
  • Disseminated intravenous coagulation
  • Yellow eyes and skin
  • Low levels of sugar in the blood
  • Pleural effusion
  • Pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs
  • Severe ascites

The prognosis for malignant mesothelioma remains disappointing, although there were some improvements made in the latest chemotherapy forecast and treatments. The multimodality treatment of malignant mesothelioma in the earlier stages has a better prognosis, but the complete healing is extremely rare. The clinical behavior of the malignancy is affected by several factors including the continuous mezolite surface of the pleural cavity that favors local metastasis via exfoliated cells, the invasion of tissue and other organs in the pleural cavity and the extremely long latency period between the exposure to asbestos and the disease development. The histological subtype and patients age and health status also can help predicting the prognosis.

Airport X-Ray Machines: UPDATE

June 29, 2010 Airport body scanners deliver radiation dose 20 times higher than first thought, warns expert 30 Jun 2010 Full body scanners at airports could increase your risk of skin cancer, experts warn. The X-ray machines have been brought in at Manchester, Gatwick and Heathrow. Scientists say that the low level beam does deliver a small dose of radiation to the body but because the beam concentrates on the skin - one of the most radiation-sensitive organs of the human body - that dose may be up to 20 times higher than first estimated.

At the same time as the US Homeland Security Department is pushing for airport x-ray machines that expose your privacy, Germany is calling a halt to this non-sense.

Probably it is worth your consideration to consider using some protective measures and to help clear the radiation exposure effects (iodine, kelp baths, our bath salt blend for chemo/radiation patients) if you’re planning to travel by air.

Germany says full-body airport scanner “nonsense”
BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany will not participate in EU proposals for airports to use full-body scanner security checks, which have raised privacy issues, its interior ministry said on Friday.

“I can tell you in all clarity that we will not take part in this nonsense,” a spokeswoman for the interior ministry told a regular news conference.

The executive European Commission proposed last month to add body scanners to a list of security measures that can be used at airports in the 27-country bloc.

EU lawmakers criticized the scanners in a resolution on Thursday, saying they were equivalent to “a virtual strip search” and raised serious human rights concerns. The lawmakers called for a detailed study of the technology before it is used.

The Commission says a number of EU states including the Netherlands already use body scanners and the EU executive wanted to harmonize conditions in which they can be operated.

The scanners do not exist at German airports and have sparked vivid criticism by politicians across the political spectrum.

This was posted in 2006. I’ve noticed a number of inquiries on the topic of airport x-rays, so I am posting it again.

So you plan to take an airplane trip in the future you say. Well now that the illustrious Department of Homeland Security is going to force you to be X-rayed, what is it that they have told you about the cumulative effects of exposure to gamma radiation in their so-called ‘security” screener?

How much more cancer risk do you need? And just what long term studies have been done, especially when considering frequent flyer risk.

I guess I would want more data.

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 20) – A woman mistakenly put her 1-month-old grandson through an X-ray machine at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.

A woman mistakenly put her infant grandson through a security X-ray at Los Angeles International Airport Saturday. Doctors said the 1-month-old did not receive a dangerous dose of radiation.

A startled security worker noticed the shape of a child on the carry-on baggage screening monitor and immediately pulled him out, the Los Angeles Times reported for a story in Wednesday’s editions.

The infant was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he did not receive a dangerous dose of radiation.

“This was an innocent mistake by an obviously inexperienced traveler,” said Paul Haney, deputy executive director of airports and security for the city’s airport agency.

The incident happened early Saturday, airport officials said.

Haney said in 1988, an infant in a car seat went through an X-ray machine at the Los Angeles airport.

The Many Uses of Apple Cider Vinegar

Posted by | Posted in Natural Health | Posted on 30-06-2010

This is a guest article from Nick Lewis.

Apple cider vinegar is one of those innocuous products that may be sitting in your cupboard gathering dust, despite containing a myriad of health uses and benefits. Yes, it can be used as a salad dressing or in a pickle sauce but it has also been touted as a folk remedy for nearly everything you can think of for decades at least.

In keeping with the current vogue for organic produce, it is more likely sold as organic apple cider vinegar and one would be advised to stick to these, as many apple cider vinegar products contain other ingredients that may actually diminish the health benefits to be garnered from using pure apple cider vinegar.

Among the many health uses its supporters lay claim to, apple cider vinegar is said to help with muscle cramps, hair loss, colds, flus, sinus congestion, dermatitis and weight loss. Various less verifiable claims have been made on its behalf over the years, and apple cider vinegar has been sold as a genuine cure-all by more unscrupulous sellers for serious conditions.

It would be a shame if organic apple cider vinegar was tarnished by these salesmen as recent scientific research has verified many of the more sensible claims for the benefits of taking apple cider vinegar, and has thrown up some interesting, and perhaps unexpected benefits.

Apple cider vinegar first rose to prominence as a weight loss aid in the 1970s, but a recent study showed that taking apple cider vinegar before a meal can increase satiety levels, meaning that participants felt more satisfied following a meal, which could combat tendencies to over-eat, lending credence to this claim.

Another recent study has shown that organic apple cider vinegar can lower post-meal glucose spikes which may contribute to weight loss, but is perhaps more interesting for diabetics who may also benefits from taking apple cider vinegar before bed to lower morning glucose levels.

Organic apple cider vinegar is also touted by proponents of the alkaline/acid balance theory as a way of alkalinising the blood, thus contributing to overall general health. Supporters of this theory claim that an acidic blood PH level can lead to all sorts of negative health effects ranging from anxiety to sluggishness. Coupled with evidence that apple cider vinegar can help lower blood pressure and strong anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties and its use as a daily tonic seems sensible.

One word of warning though: pure apple cider vinegar is very strong, so it is advisable to dilute it before imbibing as it can lead to throat damage otherwise. Typically the advice is to mix 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into a full glass of water for a simple tonic, although there are many different recipes for apple cider vinegar drinks out there. Hippocrates himself is said to have prescribed apple cider vinegar with honey for many illnesses.

The Wonders of Neti Pots

Posted by | Posted in Alternative Treatment | Posted on 30-06-2010

Neti pots have been used for centuries to take advantage of the natural healing powers of salt water. Originally they were designed to be used by yoga practitioners to help clear out the nasal passages; breathing deeply through the nose is such an important part of doing yoga that people who practice it really need to be able to have clear and open nasal passages. These interesting pots have slowly made their way into western culture and are being used more and more often as a natural remedy for some colds and infections as well as being used to prevent these kinds of things from happening in the first place.

How They Work

Neti pots look like small teapots with exceptionally long spouts. Neti pot users fill the pots with a saline solution that will later be used to clear out the nasal passages. The typical solution is about a pint of water with a teaspoon or so of salt. You have to make sure the salt is completely dissolved in the water before you try to irrigate the nasal passage; it is usually suggested that you warm the water slightly so that it is more comfortable to irrigate with.

The next step is to insert to spout into one nostril and pour the saline solution through the nasal passage and out the other nostril. Make sure that you are leaning over a sink or something to catch the expelled solution. You should breathe through your mouth during this process to make sure than you do not end up having water sucked in through your nose. Tilt your head to the side and tip the pot so that it pours into the one nostril and out the other one. Once all the liquid is out you gently blow your nose to remove any remaining water or mucus that has been loosened up. You can repeat the process for the other side also.

Reasons to Neti

Neti pots are used for a variety of reasons. A lot of ear, nose, and throat doctors are now recommending that individuals use neti pots to relieve cold and sinus infection symptoms. People who suffer from chronic sinus problems now commonly use nasal saline irrigation by way of neti pots to help with their issues. These pots provide a lot of relief from headaches, face pain, and clogged nasal passages.

Doctors also recommend neti pots for individuals recovering from various kinds of nose surgery to clear out any crusts or scabs that could normally remain in the nasal passages and cause problems. Allergy sufferers have started using neti pots as part of a regular routine to help alleviate some of their symptoms; some people who suffer from allergies now swear by the pots about how effective they are at getting rid of the allergens in their nasal passages. Anyone suffering from inflammation of nasal passages caused by a cold or sinus infection will receive immediate relief from their symptoms after using this procedure.
