Robotic Prostatectomy

In his 70s, my father-in-law was diagnosed with prostate cancer. His own father had died of the same disease, and we all wanted my father-in-law to get the best treatment available. We were relieved to learn that the cancer had not spread beyond the prostate. As far as treatment goes, he learned he had more than one option. He talked extensively with his urologist about the pros and cons of treatment with radioactive seeds versus surgical prostatectomy. Given his family history of prostate cancer, he just wanted the cancer out as soon as possible, but he was afraid that a traditional prostatectomy might cause problems with incontinence. He didnt say it, but we all knew that erectile dysfunction was also a concern. Although effective erectile dysfunction treatment is available, its preferable not to have the problem in the first place.
Then his urologist said that he performs robotic prostatectomy and that has many advantages over traditional open surgery. This type of surgery has a much more rapid return of continence and sexual function. In addition, there are only a few tiny incisions instead of a long, vertical incision. Since it less invasive, there is also a quicker recovery time. He scheduled his surgery and came through it beautifully.
Afterward, he had a temporary and brief problem with incontinence, but it completely went away after a few days. He says he has no problems whatsoever today, and hes glad he had the prostatectomy done robotically. The best part is that his cancer has never returned, and his PSA levels have been normal ever since. He will soon be coming to a very important milestone: five years cancer-free.
